Government plans: approx. 50 billion US$ investment in water sector by 2037, another 10 billion US$ for the Rural Sanitation Services Program.

(iii) Drinking Water Supply: innovative technologies for treatment & leak detection, water and sanitation safety plans, ground water treatment technologies; (iv) Industrial Wastewater Treatment Technologies for Water Recycling; (v) Flood-Early Warning System & Rain Water Harvesting Techniques; (vi) Artificial Intelligence through Smart Water & Sanitation Technologies; (vii) Agriculture Drainage Water Treatment for Reuse.

The Egyptian water and wastewater sector is a field of constant and growing investments. Expansion and renewal offer business opportunities for international companies. The design & construction of plants or supply pumps, filters, turbines, valves, controls, and other equipment and especially the ongoing expansion of seawater desalination are most promising sectors for foreign suppliers.

Water sector development is a priority for the government of Egypt because of high annual population growth (2.5%), putting pressure on existing water supply and lack of control of water supply sources (about 97% originates from outside Egypt’s borders), making the supply highly vulnerable and sensitive especially after the establishment of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The Egyptian government is trying to encounter the foreseeable water shortage with numerous investment projects. In anticipation of lower supply and rising demand, the Egyptian government is counting on more reuse of water and seawater desalination in coastal areas and invests heavily in desalination plants. The Holding Company for Water and Wastewater (HCWW) aims to increase desalination to 2.6 million cubic meters by 2037. Regional priorities are the Mediterranean Sea and Sinai Peninsula with already existing 63 plants and 39 additional locations are in planning.

The most important sectors are wastewater treatment, expansion of sewerage systems, agricultural irrigation, water desalination plants and the construction of small dams to collect rainwater. In the existing pipeline system, between 18% and 58% of the scarce water is lost. Therefore, the maintenance and reformation of water pipes are essential.
The total investing volume in the water sector is estimated to approx. 50 billion US$ in by 2037.

Waste

Government Plans: New waste management act effective, since February 2022. Produced solid waste per year in Egypt is about 95 to 100 million tons. Egypt has 28 recycling plants. This number is to be doubled in the next few years. Nine additional waste transfer stations and 20 new landfills are also planned.

Solid waste management is one of the leading subsectors in Egypt!

Egypt is missing a waste collection system. In 2021 only 47 million tons of waste were collected. The remaining amount of waste ends up in nature or on the street. That is the reason the government passed a new Waste Management Act, effective since February 22nd, 2022, with two main goals: limiting waste accumulation and expanding recycling. Fair waste disposal is a significant aspect for ensuring a sustainable future.

The government's top priority is to expand the infrastructure between and within the cities and to expand the rail networks, roads and ports for the expansion of industry including the Suez Canal Economic Zone

Egypt is building a $4.5 billion high-speed rail line with Siemens and passengers and cargo will soon be able to shoot through the Egyptian desert aboard a high-speed train, in a first for the country. The high-speed and electrified main rail line will connect Cairo to the New Administrative Capital and surrounding new cities.
Expanding the rail networks, roads and ports for the expansion of industry including the Suez Canal Economic Zone are government’s top priorities concerning the country’s infrastructure.

14 new smart cities across the country including the Nile Delta are currently in planning. In addition to high-end housing compounds which have expanded in new suburbs around the greater Cairo and the Red Sea and Mediterranean Coast, the New Administrative Capital is supposed to give 6.5 million citizens a home.

The New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), the authority responsible for developing these new cities and connecting them to the already existing infrastructure plans to incorporate schools, hospitals, shopping centers, and entertainment facilities.

NUCA is encouraging private investors to participate in the development of these new cities and by providing the basic infrastructure to make the cities attractive to investors.
