Sustainable Management of Non-Conventional Water Resources in Egypt
Session Description & Scope:
Egypt is facing increasing pressure on its limited conventional water resources due to population growth, climate change, rising water demand, and competing needs across domestic, agricultural, industrial, and environmental sectors. In this context, the sustainable development of non-conventional water resources has become a strategic necessity for strengthening water security and supporting sustainable development. Egypt is moving toward a more diversified and circular approach to water management, treating water as a resource that can be recovered, reused, recycled, and managed efficiently. This includes seawater and brackish-water desalination, safe reuse of treated municipal wastewater and agricultural drainage water, industrial wastewater recycling and Rainwater harvesting.
Together, these solutions form an integrated portfolio that can increase water availability, reduce pressure on conventional resources, support agriculture and industry, and strengthen Egypt’s transition toward a water-secure, climate-resilient, and circular water economy, supported by appropriate standards, environmental protection, & energy efficiency.
