Solid Waste and Recycling in Egypt
Challenges and New Developments
Session Description & Scope:
Moderated expert panel featuring a discussion of the waste management and recycling sector in Egypt and its current challenges. The session will focus on three interlinked topics that are key to a sustainable and well-functioning waste sector:
Sustainable financing of the sector: how waste collection, treatment and recycling services can be financed in the long term, including cost recovery, fees and tariffs, public and private investment, and new financing mechanisms.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): the introduction of EPR in Egypt, under which producers and importers take responsibility for the end-of-life management of their products and packaging, and its potential to provide dedicated funding and increase recycling rates.
The role of municipalities: the responsibilities, capacities and needs of municipalities as key providers of waste services, and how they can cooperate with the national regulator and the private sector.
A structured discussion on practical implementation topics will conclude with an audience Q&A session. The panel discussion combines compact technology introductions with in-depth knowledge exchange between experts and industry professionals.
